The Gap

"Good for families that don't mind the drive to work, not so great for singles or DINKs."

Pros: Leafy suburb with a number of parks. Safe and friendly environment with good schools nearby.
Cons: No rail, buses can be sporatic but usually ok during peak hour. On average it takes 30-35min to drive to the city with no traffic, allow for at least twice that with morning traffic. No real nightlife and very little in the way of eating out.
*Note* Watch out for the carpet eating moths! Make sure you put in synthetic or treated carpets and keep all pantry food in air-tight containers. They also eat books and clothes, but seem to really enjoy being in the pantry and carpet. Other then those, it is just the usual pests.

A nice family environment, but rather isolated and insular. Great for families, not so great for singles or DINKs that may want a more convenient location with better retail and nightlife opportunities.

"On average it takes 30-35min to drive to the city with no traffic..." - You must be riding a skateboard if it takes that long to get to the city... It's a 8-10km drive, depending on which part of The Gap you live in - which with no traffic takes no more than 15 minutes!

You must be speeding!

To garner a 3rd party, impartial opinion, I looked it up on Google Maps to see the estimated time. The fastest route is 34 minutes.

I used Petmar St to Queen St, it would differ by about 5min depending on where in The Gap you are travelling from and where in the City you are heading, but not by 20min...

This is from google maps:

Hi Shahara, I drove in this morning as usual and it took me around 20 minutes to eagle street in total and not once did I speed, however as mentioned I am in the T2 lane all of the time which is 60km/h up until my final part of the journey.

I do this every morning and again in the evening. Yes it is around 12k's in total. I guess it depends on what time you leave but I find there is almost no traffic until I reach Ashgrove to the City and almost no traffic from Ashgrove when I leave the city.

Just a quick bit of maths on this one as well which seems to have been lost as we all rely on our friend google for everything. If I travel at an average of 40km/h (which is quite slow I think for this run) I am able to cover 20km's in 30 minutes and therefore around 15 km's in 22 minutes (very average time). As I am in the T2 lane I am able to mostly travel at 60km/h and probably average more like 50km/h so there is no need to speed to do the run at worst in around 20 minutes. The stop streets and buses on average cause me 1 stop/pause per run (usually 1 or the other).

As marckdesigns mentions it should take around 15 minutes which is exactly what I experience.

As for Google Maps, I am pretty sure that they give good directions but as for time it takes I would doubt their accuracy and ability to intelligently ascertain what an average trip would take as I do it every day.

Cheers
Neil

Sparodic buses? Have you even hopped on a bus?

The 385 is every 10 mins during peak hours, and every 15 minutes normally. 7 days a week. From 5am till approx 11pm.

Cell/Mobile reception only 3 out of 5, there are tonnes of mobile towers in the Gap and I have never had a call drop out as a result.

1 star for local government? What are you baseing that on?

Geraldine Knapp is the Brisbane City Counciller and she is out and about everywhere, from School fete's to graduations to speech nights.

BCC Services are great, parks are mowed regularly, the place is clean and tidy and they are approachable.

Resale Value? Only 3 out of 5? We are on our 3rd house in the Gap and each time we have upgraded we have made money, there is a very robust housing market in the Gap so not sure what you are referring to.

BTW I have never seen a carpet eating moth in my 8 years in the Gap, so I think you must have been unlucky in that respect.

I also agree that it is a very family orientated suburb and not suited to singles or DINKS.

Isolated and Insular is a bit harsh. Especially when you give neighbourhood spirit 4 out of 5. The Gap is the largest suburb in Brisbane and it surrounded on 3 sides by Brisbane State Forest, Brisbane Water board land and Enogerra Army base land. So it cannot get any bigger and its only 10-12 kms from the CBD.

It is a fantastic place to live and rasie kids.
