Bracken Ridge

"Degrading into a slum with too many undesirables"

Bracken Ridge *would* be quite nice ... but there most certainly is a SERIOUS and increasingly severe problem with many undesirables having moved here.
We have been living here for two years - and are packing up to leave for good! We feel this suburb, at least in some parts is at crisis point. I can particularly speak for the area between Phillips St and Barbour Rd/Judes St and surrounding areas around St. Josephs Primary School. It seems Bracken Ridge has become a favourite place for many shared houses with young, reckless idiots. The streets appear taken over by P-platers in their old, illegally modified cars with noisy mufflers. We see and hear extremely dangerous and aggressive racing around the neighbourhood (with rubber left on the bitumen) and the cars are getting noisier every day it seems. Groups of young revellers are walking on the streets at night on the weekends, probably coming home from the Rum Jungle and they usually make their presence pretty obvious. Excessively noisy parties with plenty of subwoofer also happening nearly every weekend, especially in the warmer months. Police is hopeless - they will not do anything, no matter how many times you call. Parties usually go until at least 2.30am but often it is 4am before you can find some sleep. We have also had glass bottles thrown out of cars right in front of our house.
I know there are also nice people living in Bracken Ridge, but honestly the constant experience of aggression in our immediate neighbourhood is unbearable for us. It also seems that for some reason, many residents here seem to find it normal to put their car stereo on full throttle when they are still on their driveway, or when they get home. Wouldn't it be normal to lower the volume until you are on your way, or before you turn into your street, as a courtesy to your neighbours? This simply doesn't happen, the ignorance by many people here is simply disgusting.

Great for

  • Access to all important facilities
  • Convenience to the north and south coast/ airport
  • Wide leafy flat streets

Not great for

  • Police not effectively enforcing people's right to quiet enjoyment in neighbourhoods (noisy party complaints)
  • Real concern about reckless driving and illegal car modifications (often P-plater)
  • Not safe at night (especially weekends)
  • "Wrong Side of The Tracks" bringing the whole suburb into disrepute

Yes, lots of young families in Bracken Ridge, including kids who have grown up and progressed to driving their own vehicles. Great buses, but still a 'car' suburb on the whole. Anyway, it's good to see that the undesirables are moving out!

Uey

Nope, that's not what's happening according to our observations. The fact that grown up kids are getting their own vehicles does not mean it was getting quieter, quite the opposite actually as they still live with their parents. Most of these youngsters drive modified old cars and they are very noisy as a result. I have also seen home based "car work shops" where youngsters do contract work and even spray paint cars with garage door open....I could not believe it when I was jogging past one night (it stank horribly!). But what I was referring to in my review however, was that an obviously increasing number of undesirables have been moving INTO the suburb (not out). Too many houses are being shared due to high rents, and this means parties, loud music and some form of noise and nuisance due to someone being home at all times.

BRFamily

Uey, that is not true. We live in Bracken Ridge within this area and have no trouble with P-Plate drivers, loud parties and undesirables of any kind.

Yes, it IS true! Why the hell should I be telling lies? We were getting literally sick by living among all these inconsiderate people. Anyone saying I'm not telling the truth must either have an agenda or be deaf and blind! I know there ARE many people trying to sell, and obviously real suburb reviews do not always help selling in a trouble suburb, but this does not mean I am trying to make friends here by lying! On the other hand, people like yourselves, posting glamorous but non-personal "descriptive" type reviews on a suburb, ending with hype sentences like: "Get in now while house prices are still reasonable." DO NOT DESERVE TO BE TRUSTED!
I can tell you that I have done my part in working with Police and even contacted local politicians, tried to work with the Dept of Transport (re: the illegally modified cars driving dangerously in the neighbourhoods). In the end, they were all hopeless and after one year of constant nuisances and never looking forward to weekends, we had enough and moved out. Good luck for your house sale "BRfamily"!

Dear Uey I think that perhaps you should move. Bracken ridge is a lovely and quite family friendly suburb. I am not selling and enjoy raising my family, being close to the beach and having access to fantastic schools such as St Josephs Primary. As I write this response I am sipping on my coffee looking out the window, no noise, no fast cars, all I can hear are my children playing. I hope you find happiness.

Hi, 'ourhome'. No need to tell me what to do, nor to dispute our experiences while living in BR. Unlike others, we actually walk our talk and therefore of course left Bracken Ridge in the meantime. The only reason why I responded above is because I was blatantly told I was lying. You are not much better with your blanket statement that [the whole suburb] is 'lovely and quite' (I guess you meant 'quiet'). Frankly, I don't care whether or not you might be living in one of a few relatively quiet streets as this does not mean the whole of Bracken Ridge is as you describe. We've had multiple shared houses in our neighbourhood with constant loud music, gatherings and nuisances. Nearly every weekend, especially in the warmer months, someone would have a loud party. I am giving you a rough idea of the problem area we experienced: Between Philips St, Barbour Rd (and Billard St just behind), top end of Capistrano St, to Walu St. The idiots were doing regular racing coming from Capistrano, turning sharply into Elsergundo (leaving black marks) up the hill where you'll find St Josephs Primary. I always wondered when someone would be killed. On weekends, they were throwing bottles and other junk onto the streets from their cars. One neighbour even had a glass bottle thrown onto his house roof in the middle of the night. Every third car appeared to P-platers and had these noisy mufflers, so you could hear them from a 100 metres away. We had to move our bedroom from the front to the much smaller room at the back to find some sleep (if there was no party). So don't you tell me Bracken Ridge is lovely and quiet.

Well we moved from Sydney, and I consider this area Lovely and quiet. In comparison to Sydney and Melbourne the area is undervalued with its close links to the water and city. My husband and I are both teachers, respected professionally and I hope that we would not "lie" to others and I therefore state again that the area is lovely and quiet family suburb. I am glad to hear you have moved on, good luck with your new abode. I am once again happy, like many others, living in Bracken Ridge. Cheers Ourhome

Bargara

"Very nice :)"

Great holiday or sea change destination with less overcrowding. If you are into beaches, golf or just enjoying the scenery you will not be disappointed. Great to explore on your motor bike also, you can ride (or drive in your car) along scenic roads (often through cane field areas) to Burnett Heads to the north (new bridge connecting to the Portside), or via Woongarra Scenic Drive to Innes Park and Coral Cove, from there to Elliot Heads via Back Windemere Rd.

North of Bargara, or just south of Burnett Heads you will find Mon Repos Environmental Park (turtle rookery) with a beautiful beach.

Bargara itself has a new shopping centre with a big Woolies. Nielson Park to the north is nice for a visit, as is Kellys Beach or secluded Rifle Range Beach to the south.

Just off the main road between Bargara and Bundaberg is the 'The Hummock', a volcanic remnant. It offers a great vista of the surrounding countryside, spectacular sunsets and views towards Bargara and the general coastline.

Enjoy your stay!
