Why is Braidwood sooo backward?

Because getting out of the middle ages hasn't yet happened, so forget the modern 21st century that hasn't happened yet either. But the bakery in the main street is excellent for a good bite to eat.

Unfortunately Braidwood still has people who think it’s still 1899 and cannot move with the times. These people are now dying off so the younger generation can now allow Braidwood to grow without these barriers blocking any type of progress.

The generations that are coming through like it the way it is too, so it's not likely to change anytime soon. It's also a Heritage listed town, so it has strict rules in place to maintain what the town is.
