Reviews of Box Hill, VIC

"Pretty but overpriced"

We live in Boxhill south, which is a lot quieter than boxhill. Rent is getting higher and higher and the apartments offered in boxhill are tiny with no storage. Would recommend looking at units instead as they seem roomy. Nice parks and greenery but not very safe for kids, had two bad experiences in this suburb regarding safety.

"Satellite City"

We have an investment property in Box Hill and have never had any problems with demand from tenants wanting to live in the area due to the central location and easy access to public transport - trains, trams, buses and Eastlink freeway! Other amenities includes Box Hill central shopping center, the well established Box Hill Hospital, Box Hill Library and surrounding schools.

One would be mistaken that you're in the heart of the CBD when you take a glimpse of the high rise office buildings and apartment living in Box Hill. With only 14 Kms from the Melbourne central business district, Box Hill is truly a Satellite city on its on merits!
The busy streets of Box Hill central brings the suburb alive with shopping, fresh markets and a varsity of restaurants and cafes!

Throughout the smaller streets of Box Hill you can find yourself lost in beautiful tree-lined streets with character weatherboards homes which reminds you of yesteryear...

Box Hill is a established and matured suburb and have attracted capital growth year on year due to his location and close to growth suburbs of Surrey Hills, Blackburn and Doncaster.

Box Hill is one of Melbourne's fastest growing suburbs, located only 12 km from Melbourne CBD.
This cultural diverse suburb has a number of schools including Box Hill High, Kingswood College, Our Lady of Sion, St Francis Xavier Catholic Primary School and Box Hill TAFE.
Surrounded by public transport including Tram Terminus for easy access into the CBD and shopping at your fingertips with Box Hill Central Shopping Centre, Fresh Food Marketplace plus a number of beautiful Asian Cuisines including Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian, Thai, Indonesian, Korean, just to note a few. All of this makes the suburb of Box Hill a desirable choice of living.

"Hustle and Bustle in the Heart of the Leafy Eastern Suburbs"

If eating out at a variety of fantastic Asian restaurants and having easy access to the CBD and beyond is your thing, then look no further than Box Hill.
A small metropolis in the heart of Melbourne's east with a variety of accommodation options from a myriad of brand new apartments and large houses you will be spoiled for choice with places to live. Box Hill Central is great for shopping and eating out with some of the best Asian food around.
The area also boats the 109 Tram and the train line making access to the CBD and other locations in the east a breeze. A number of educational facilities are also local such as Box Hill TAFE and Box Hill Secondary College.

"Poor Man's Chinatown"

I love Box Hill because of food and accessibility. It's very busy on a weekday and a weekend because people stop by here for work or something to eat. This is proven when you drive through Whitehorse Road and Maroondah Highway, trams especially travel near the Shopping district almost every day. Hence why Traffic is still a problem and some people act aggressively while some are greedy. Can't say much and it has everything too. A train station is in near the shopping complex (it's honestly dirty and unbearable to wait), there's plenty of stores however it's not a clean suburb within the centre of the area. Safety is guaranteed since the crime rate is low.

"Convenient but unappealing in parts"

I have lived here for two years.

PROS - There are some nice pockets like the areas around Albion Rd and Surrey Park with leafy, tree-lined streets and beautiful-looking Californian bungalows. Plenty of parks in the vicinity like Box Hill Gardens and the lovely Surrey Park. Very convenient for shopping, food and public transport. You can get to the CBD quicker than from many areas in the inner city on the morning express trains.

CONS - The Box Hill Central/mall area is pretty unappealing and badly needs a facelift, with questionable youths hanging around after school (annoying but not threatening), not to mention untalented buskers and people soliciting you for donations/causes. The traffic around the shopping area can get very bad on the weekends and during peak-hour which also makes the area somewhat unpleasant.

The key to finding a good property is to locate one on a quiet street within walking distance of the station/shopping area but far enough away so that the traffic/noise is not an issue.

"Box Hill - A cultural melting pot!"

Located only 12km east of Melbourne CBD, Box Hill (City of Whitehorse) is one of Melbourne's oldest suburbs which has become a melting pot of cultural diversity. With a major hospital facility (Epworth Eastern), Box Hill TAFE, Box Hill High and many large corporate office suites (including the new Taxation Office Building), Box Hill has evolved into a hive of activity, all of which is centred around Box Hill train station and tram terminus, with the Box Hill Centro shopping precinct offering foods of the world and many great specialty shops, including the popular Box Hill Fresh Food Marketplace. People travel from far & wide to dine out in any of the amazing restaurants on offer; from traditional Chinese fare, to Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Malaysian, Japanese, Indonesian and so on...
Surrounding the bustling hub of Box Hill Central, you will find some stunning suburban tree-lined streetscapes, offering a vast array of architecture; from period homesteads, to the classic Californian Bungalow's and Victorian Weatherboards. Of course, there are plenty of units and apartment blocks within walking distance of Box Hill Central, making it a great place to invest. Future development is clearly evident as Box Hill continues to grow and evolve. There's a little a bit of something for everyone in Box Hill!

"Get ready for the high rise dog boxes & pychiatric wards."

Yet another china town. Not an integrated suburb. Is commercial/mainstream. Generally speaking, the people here are emotionless, therefore come across as cold. Business is void of any pleasant or genuine transaction other than for your money and high/fast turnover.

Not great for

  • Another homogenised suburb with people having desire/greed for western lifestyle but only ends up being turned into tacky and trashy. Example european style turned to commercial crap by the Americans and then the Asians making it even more tacky and commercial.

"Busy suburb, rich in culture"

Box Hill is known for its diverse culture and range of dining options. Along Carrington St, Station St and Maroondah Hwy there are several great places for food. Health services are easy to access, with both private and public healthcare centers located near the main shopping precinct. I can only think of 6 places off the top of my head, not to mention that health care areas on the top floors of both Box Hill centrist Public transport is also relatively easy, however congestion along Station St and Elgar Rd is very frustrating. It is also a great initiative to renovate Surrey Park and Box Hill Hospital, however the visual attractiveness of the new 'block' apartment is severely lacking, which is a great shame.
However, I enjoy going to the local parks which are great for families to have fun as well as for personal fitness purposes. Box Hill is also relatively safe at night time due to the absence of bars and pubs which are able to initiate alcohol fueled violence. The Box Hill library offers a reasonable place to study, or relax, but due to its recent popularity, the noise levels are quite high.

Great for

  • Parks and recreation
  • Volunteer opportunities
  • Dining options.
  • Convenient

Not great for

  • Absence of bike paths
  • Services and support lack promotion
  • Developers pulling down old houses with character and replacing them with ugly units and apartments

"A nice place to live"

I lived in Box hill for more than 10 years. Never had any problems with it. for me, the best thing is the transportation, and dinning options. for transport, you've got bus, tram (109) and train. Dinning options are good too, you've got a number of affordable and delicious restaurants in the heart of box hill (Station street) and also on whitehorse road. probably one of the things i don't like about Box Hill is that the house/unit/realestate is not that affordable at all. oh well, this is melbourne...
in summary, a nice place to live. recommended.

"Friendly and very liveable"

I grew up in this area, moved out to a 'flashier' suburb for many years, and have now come back. People are just friendlier here, and have welcomed us instantly. I can be working in my garden and people who I don't even know will stop to chat, which I never experienced living in my previous suburb (I don't think I was the 'right' kind of person for the locals!). I'm now a short walk from most things I need, with a full choice of public transport options. My (older) kids love the location, and how close we are to shops, parks, transport etc. Period houses, abound, particularly Californian Bungalows, and they can still be affordable. House block sizes in this area can also be quite large. We were able to get far more house for our money by moving here, with an increase in amenity, neighbourliness, and convenience to boot.

"Great if you like period homes in quiet streets without the big pricetags in Surrey Hills"

I've lived here since 1994 in a lovely street (alexander street) which is comprised of a mix of victorian, edwardian and californian bungalow style homes. It's a nice quiet street with wonderful neighbours. Facilities are excellent, though I prefer to walk to the central area as parking can be tight during busy times. In fact, most facilities in my area are well within walking range. A wonderful choice of mainly asian restaurants and good shopping mean I don't leave this suburb for very much. We've never experienced any crime in all of our time here. There's a great choice of good schools locally. For working people, you'll find that due to it's central location in melbourne, you don't really have to commute too far. I wouldn't really consider moving from here unless I was leaving Melbourne altogether. You will also find it very easy to sell your home, all properties are generally auctioned and don't hang around on the market for too long (unless the price is wrong)

"Great family neighbourhood"

BHS has a great feel. It has improved immensely ober the last 5 years and now is very comfortable. We have buses and trains on our doorstep as well as excellent local restaurants. We are in the middle of Forest Hill, Doncaster and Chaddy and the Glen isn't far either. Local primary schools, particularly Roberst McCubbin are great. The kids ride their bikes down the streets and ytou are always waving at friendly neighbours in the street. There seems to be a real mix between "oldies" and families which is lovely. A real community!

"Busy Central Hub"

Situated between Mont Albert and Blackburn, Box Hill is a busy hub in the middle to outer east of Melbourne with some beautiful old period-style homes on tree-lined streets. It is a well-established area and is very well serviced. There's Box Hill Centro, train station, tram stops and hospital as well as a vast array of restaurants and cafes. There are 2 large reserves for residents' enjoyment, Surrey Park and R.H.L Sparks Reserve, and a high school, tafe, indoor swimming pool and nursing home too. Deakin University is just a short car trip or tram ride away and with the Eastern Freeway just minutes away, its only a short drive to the Melbourne CBD. A great suburb to live in if you're looking for convenience and wanting to be close to everything!
