Philadelphia is definitely what they call an urban heat island in the summer. The city feels considerably warmer than in surrounding rural areas because of the high concentration of people within the city limits, the wind flow isn't as great within the city. Luckily, some tall buildings block out the sun when you're in center city, so there is some relief during the day if you can get into a shady spot.

Depending on the month and year, Philadelphia can get as hot as 104 degrees in the summer time. This is actually one of the record highs. The average for summer time is between 90 and 100 degrees, and many times it feels 5 to 8 degrees hotter than it actually is. The humidity is a killer in the summer.
